Basement sewage backup cleanup addresses one of the more serious basement flooding situations – water contaminated with sewage that's backed up through floor drains or plumbing, which poses real health risks and requires more extensive sanitization than a standard clean water flood. Basements are especially prone to sewage backups since they sit at the lowest point of a home's plumbing system, making them the natural place backed-up sewage ends up.
This is what you're dealing with if water in your basement has an obvious sewage smell, if the flooding came from a floor drain, toilet, or plumbing backup rather than from outside water intrusion, or if standing water has been present long enough that it's likely developed bacterial contamination even if it didn't start as sewage. Any backup involving your home's sewage or septic system should always be treated as contaminated water, regardless of how it initially looks.
We approach sewage backup differently from a clean water flood, starting with proper protective equipment and containment to keep contamination from spreading to unaffected parts of the basement or home. We extract the contaminated water using equipment dedicated to biohazard situations, and anything porous the water touched – carpet, carpet padding, drywall below the waterline – typically can't be saved and gets removed and disposed of properly rather than dried and reused. Hard surfaces get thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with appropriate antimicrobial treatments, and we monitor conditions throughout to confirm the space is genuinely safe before considering the job complete.
Cost is generally higher than a clean water basement flood given the more extensive material removal, specialized handling, and sanitization required. Homes in Diablo, CA dealing with sewage backups need this level of response regardless of how contained the situation initially looks, since contamination isn't always visible.
